2021 Lost Penny
Water Hole
Mourvèdre

$35.00

The last variety we have produced from our estate vineyards is Mourvèdre, also known as Mataro. Our Mourvèdre vines were planted on the last remaining sheep paddock. The sheep once drank from an ancient trough made from a tree branch (water hole), which continued to be used until the last sheep were sold. This trough has now been moved into our yard as a feature and is used as a flower tub. We have named our Mourvèdre Water Hole homage to the old sheep trough.

Vintage Notes

Following two particularly dry seasons, our figures were crossed that the 2021 vintage would be much kinder. Conditions through summer were relatively mild. Cool mornings and maximum temperatures below 30C for most of January provided optimal ripening conditions. The quality was exceptional, with the reds having intense, rich, balanced flavours and colours.

Winemaker Notes

Colour: Dark Ink red with purple hue
Nose: Blue Berries, plum, and spice.
Palate: Fleshy blue fruits, dark cherry and spice.

This is a variety normally blended together with Grenache and Shiraz. However, we wanted to show case the sweet fruits that come from the Mourvèdre. Lovely balance between fruit and acidity making this wine
super for drinking now or to hold onto for a few years.
